Chapter 12: Wing and the World of Aura
[ ** SYSTEM MESSAGE: USER ADAM RICHTER. NEW OBJECTIVE: ACCUMULATE 20 UNIQUE DEATHS FOR SYSTEM UPGRADE LVL 1. CURRENT PROGRESS: 11/20. FINANCIAL REQUIREMENT: 10,000,000 JENNY. CURRENT JENNY: [CLASSIFIED]. ** ]
The discovery of Nen was, for Gon and Killua, a revelation. For Adam, it was a confirmation of his meta-knowledge and a puzzle. He knew what Nen was, but he couldn't learn it. His system was his only teacher, and it taught through terminal practical application.
" Alright, Wing's here. Zushi's here. The boys are about to get their minds blown. And me? I'm just here to nod sagely, pretend I understand their struggles, and figure out how to get myself killed by a Nen user who knows a different fundamental technique. This is like being in a class where you already know the answers, but you have to pretend to struggle so you don't look like a show-off. Except the 'struggle' involves violent death. "
Adam watched Wing's initial demonstration of Nen, the sheer power and control he exhibited. Gon and Killua, wide-eyed, were desperate to learn. Adam felt the familiar hum of Wing's aura, now slightly more discernible with his nascent 'Zetsu' ability. He couldn't see it fully yet, but he could feel it.
"Remarkable, Wing-sensei!" Adam exclaimed, nodding sagely. "Truly. The way you just… do that. It's almost as if you've been practicing for years! Such dedication! I, for one, prefer a more 'instant gratification' approach to superpowers. Like, poof! Now I can fly! Or, poof! Now I can summon a pizza!"
Wing merely arched an eyebrow, a faint, knowing smile playing on his lips. He seemed to sense something off about Adam, a deeper understanding that went beyond his years.
As Wing explained Ten, the basic principle of keeping one's aura within and around the body, Adam felt a profound frustration. He understood the concept, intellectually, thanks to his meta-knowledge and newly acquired 'Zetsu'. He could suppress his aura. But he couldn't generate a consistent, flowing cocoon of it. It felt like trying to write a novel without knowing how to hold a pen.
"So, just to clarify," Adam interrupted Wing, "I'm supposed to 'keep my aura from leaking out,' right? Like a leaky faucet, but with life energy? What if my faucet is just… fundamentally broken? Like, it's not leaking, it's just not there in the first place?" He gestured vaguely at himself. "Is there a 'Nen Plumber' I can call?"
Wing looked at him intently. "Your aura is unique, young one. It ebbs and flows in an unusual pattern. You seem to possess a natural talent for concealment, but perhaps not for projection."
"Ah, yes! My natural talent for being subtly annoying!" Adam chirped, internally panicking slightly. He sees it! He sees my weird aura! I knew I should have worked on my 'master of disguise' skill instead of 'basic axe proficiency'!
Adam focused on observing. He tried to mimic Gon and Killua as they practiced their Ten, but it was futile. His system wasn't about learning; it was about copying. Which meant he needed to die to someone who knew Ten or Ren. He had to fight more Nen users.
He re-entered the arena, consciously seeking opponents who displayed visible (or subtly detectable by his 'Zetsu') aura. He wanted someone with a clear mastery of the basics. He faced a series of opponents, winning most of his fights with his physical skills and his developing 'Zetsu' (which allowed him to mask his attacks until the last second). The money was flowing in, slowly but surely. He was getting closer to that 10 million Jenny.
Finally, he was matched against a seasoned arena fighter, a bald man named Goro who clearly had a solid grasp of Ten and Ren. Goro constantly maintained a powerful, defensive aura around him, making his blows heavy and his body resilient.
" Alright, Goro, old man! Time to impart some wisdom! And by 'wisdom,' I mean 'Nen abilities'! This is for a good cause, really. My own incredibly selfish, power-hungry cause! "
Adam engaged Goro, using his 'Skin Hardening' to tank some blows, but Goro's Ren-enhanced punches still hit with concussive force. Adam needed to get close, to feel the full effect of Goro's maintained aura. He decided to provoke him.
"You know, Goro," Adam panted, dodging a particularly heavy punch, "for a man with such a powerful aura, your fashion sense is incredibly… bland. Is that a regulation arena outfit, or did you just lose a bet with a beige couch?"
Goro, momentarily distracted by the insult, lunged with an even more forceful Ren-infused punch. It was exactly what Adam needed. He met the blow head-on, allowing the full impact of Goro's maintained aura to wash over him. The punch cracked his skull, and the sheer force of the Ren shattered his internal organs. It was a total, brutal obliteration. Darkness.

[ ** SYSTEM MESSAGE: ACQUIRED SKILL: [B-RANK NEN SKILL] TEN (REN). ** ]
" YES! Ten! Or Ren! Whatever! I got a foundational Nen skill! Now I can defend against aura attacks! And maybe, just maybe, look cool doing it! Take that, Wing! I don't need your rigorous training! I have death! "
Adam gasped, sitting up in his inn room. He felt a profound connection to his own life force. He could now, instinctively, flow his aura around his body, forming a protective cocoon. It was faint, not as powerful as Goro's, but it was there. He was now at 12/20 unique deaths.
He quickly made his way back to the arena. Gon and Killua were still training with Wing. Adam found them, a triumphant grin on his face. He extended his hand, and for a fleeting moment, a faint, almost imperceptible aura shimmered around his palm. He immediately suppressed it with 'Zetsu'.
"Wing-sensei," Adam said, bowing slightly, "I've been practicing your teachings. And I must say, I think I'm starting to get the hang of it. Just call me 'Master of the Invisible Shield' from now on."
Wing looked at Adam, a flicker of surprise in his eyes, then a slight nod. "Indeed. Your progress is… remarkably swift."
Adam just winked. He was going to master Nen his own way. One glorious, painful death at a time. And he was going to become very, very rich doing it.
