Chapter 4 - When Colors Fade

Sam's rainbow wings blazed like a live prism, pushing back the shadow creature that had crashed through the cafeteria window. The monster shrieked and faded into wisps of darkness, but three more took its place.

"This way!" Alex yelled, their golden wings spread wide as they led students toward the emergency exits.

"Everyone stay together!" Riley grabbed Sam's arm, her silver wings crackling with protective magic.

"We need to get you out of here! They're after you!" But Sam couldn't move. All around the canteen, students stared at them with wide eyes. The secret was out. After seventeen years of hiding, everyone could see the rainbow wings that weren't meant to exist.

"Is that really...?" mumbled a girl with green wings.

"The Rainbow Guardian," someone else breathed.

"From the old stories."

"Focus!" Alex barked, using their royal training to take control.

"We can talk legends later. Right now, we survive!" The shadow creatures pressed closer, their dark wings forming a wall of moving darkness. But something strange happened - wherever Sam's rainbow light touched them, they paused, as if the colors caused them pain. "Your wings," Riley said quickly.

"They're afraid of your wings!" Sam looked down at their glowing rainbow feathers, then back at the receding monsters.

"I don't understand. I don't know how to stop this."

"Then learn fast," Alex said grimly, drawing their training sword.

"Because they're regrouping." Through the shattered windows, they could see the sky going completely black.

The strange clouds that had appeared at the kingdom's borders were now overhead, swirling like a huge storm. But this wasn't weather - this was something alive and hungry.

"Look!" Riley pointed outside with a shaky finger. Across the school grounds, people were stumbling and falling.

Their wings - once bright with color - were turning to dull gray. A teacher with beautiful blue wings collapsed as the color drained away totally, leaving them white as bone.

"It's spreading," Sam whispered in fear.

"The dark magic is stealing everyone's colors." Queen Celestia's voice echoed through the academy's crystal communication system, but it sounded strained and scared.

"All students and teachers, proceed to the Great Hall immediately. This is not a drill."

As they ran through the hallways, Sam saw more victims of the color drain. A janitor with purple wings sat against a wall, looking at his now-gray feathers in shock.

A group of younger students crowded together, their once-bright wings now faded to pale shadows.

"How is this possible?" Alex asked, their golden wings still blazing with color but fading at the edges.

"The Shadow King," Riley said, her voice barely a whisper.

"It has to be. The tales say he feeds on wing magic."

They burst into the Great Hall to find chaos. Hundreds of students packed the room, many of them crying as they stared at their fading wings. Queen Celestia stood at the podium, her platinum wings dim but still keeping their color.

"Citizens of Aetheria," the Queen began, her voice carrying despite the fear.

"We are under attack by an old enemy.

The Shadow King has returned." Gasps and screams filled the hall. Many students had never heard the name, but the older staff members went pale with fear.

"The dark magic is designed to steal your wing colors," Queen Celestia continued.

"Without your colors, you lose your magic, your identity, your very essence." A teacher with faded orange wings raised her hand.

"Your Majesty, how do we stop it?"

The Queen's eyes found Sam in the crowd. "According to the old texts, only the Rainbow Guardian can defeat the Shadow King.

But..." She paused, looking older than her years.

"The last Rainbow Guardian died saving the kingdom a thousand years ago." All eyes turned to Sam, who wished they could disappear. The rainbow light from their wings was impossible to hide now, casting bright reflections on the crystal walls.

"Is it true?" called out a student.

"Are you really the Rainbow Guardian?" Sam's mouth felt dry as sand. "I... I don't know. I've always had these wings, but I don't know what that means."

"It means you're our only hope," Queen Celestia said gravely. "But first, we must get you to safety. The Shadow King will send everything he has to catch you."

As if called by her words, the Great Hall's massive doors exploded inward. Shadow creatures poured through the hole, their dark wings blocking out the light. Students screamed and ran, but there was nowhere to go.

"Protect the Guardian!" Alex shouted, their golden wings flaring as they drew their sword. But the dark creatures weren't interested in fighting.

They moved with purpose, flowing around the panicked students like water around rocks. They were looking for one specific target.

"Sam!" Riley cried as a huge shadow creature lunged toward them. Sam's rainbow wings burst with brilliant light, forming a barrier that sent the creature flying backward.

But more kept coming, and Sam could feel their energy fading with each burst of power.

"I can't keep this up!" Sam gasped. Queen Celestia suddenly appeared beside them, her silver wings glowing with royal magic.

"This way! There's a secret tunnel!" She led them toward a crystal panel in the wall that slid open at her touch.

"Quickly! This leads to the house." As they ran through the hidden tunnel, Sam could hear the chaos behind them getting louder. More people were losing their wing colors, their screams echoing through the crystal halls.

"How many people are affected?" Sam asked, their rainbow wings flickering with tiredness.

"Half the outer islands have gone completely gray," Queen Celestia replied grimly.

"If we don't stop this soon, the entire kingdom will fall." They emerged into the crystal palace, but even here, the effects were obvious.

Servants with fading wings stumbled through the halls, and the usually bright crystal walls seemed darker than before.

"The throne room," Queen Celestia said, leading them up a winding staircase.

"There are protections there that should hold for now." But as they climbed, Riley suddenly stopped.

"Wait," she said, her silver wings flickering dangerously.

"I feel strange." Sam turned to see their best friend wobbling on her feet. Riley's beautiful silver wings were losing their shine, gray moving in from the edges like frost.

"No," Sam breathed.

"Riley, no!"

"I'm sorry," Riley whispered as she fell, her wings now completely gray.

"I tried to fight it, but it's too strong." Sam caught their friend as she fell, rainbow light pouring from their wings in desperate waves. But nothing happened. Riley's wings stayed gray and lifeless.

"The shadow magic is getting stronger," Queen Celestia said quickly.

"Even the palace protections won't hold much longer." Alex's golden wings twitched, and Sam saw fear in their eyes for the first time.

"How long do we have?"

"Hours, maybe less," the Queen responded.

"The Shadow King is feeding on every person whose colors he steals. Soon he'll be strong enough to take the entire kingdom." Sam looked down at Riley's pale face, then at Alex's dimming wings, then at the gray sky visible through the crystal windows.

Everywhere they looked, color was dying.

"There has to be something we can do," Sam said desperately.

"Some way to fight back." Queen Celestia opened an old book with trembling hands.

"According to this, the Rainbow Guardian has the power to return stolen colors.

But..." She paused.

"The magic requires a great sacrifice."

"What kind of sacrifice?" Alex asked. The Queen's platinum wings went totally gray as she read the final words.

"The Rainbow Guardian must give up their own life force to save the kingdom."

As Queen Celestia collapsed beside Riley, her wings now lifeless and gray, Sam understood the terrible truth.

To save everyone they loved, they would have to die.

The Shadow King's laughter echoed through the crystal palace, getting closer with each passing moment.

And Sam had to choose: their life, or their land.
