"Mariam?" Selene asked, still surprised to see Mariam here at the hospital.
She inhaled deeply, her eyes widening as she watched Mariam walk toward them. Her head spun in confusion, her heart pounding loudly against her ribcage.
Why did the universe think it was okay to keep playing these games on her?
"Selene! Cyrus!" Sandy whispered silently.
"I know," Selene whispered back, thinking of an excuse to give Mariam and how she would keep her son, who was just a few inches away in the other room, hidden from her stepmother.
"Oh my goodness, this is such an amazing surprise!" Mariam said as she came closer, pulling them both into a big hug.
"It's such a surprise to see you here too," Selene said awkwardly, trying to fake a smile. But when Mariam pulled her and Sandy into a deep embrace, the smile instantly turned real, as she let herself melt into Mariam's motherly touch.
