Chapter 14 - Who Will Save You?

Booths were destroyed. The giant thing had rolled over several dozen people. Its tail had smacked into a building, causing walls to crumble. Everyone in the marketing district fled from the direction of the beast, almost trampling me. I dropped my goods and had to watch as they were pummeled under hundreds of feet.

"God damn it!" I yelled.

The thing that fell from the sky sat up, raising its great head to stare at the fleeing humans.. When it moved, I felt that heavy weight on me. It reminded me of what Preyacht did to my classmate. The thing's wings reminded me of her disfiguration. I shuddered, unable to tear my eyes away from it.

Like a snake, the beast slithered through the street on its belly. Its eyes scanned the people who were in front of it. Its head was above the roofs of the two stories on either side of the street. It had a long neck and used the talons in its wings to pull itself across the ground. Stone cracked under its weight.

It halted over a few cowering merchants. They had been unable to escape, trapped in the booth by fallen rubble. Its eyes flickered open to reveal milk white spheres. A yellow slit sprouted into an iris, and it turned its head to inspect the humans. Its tongue flickered in the air, a pink tendril that tasted fear. It hissed in amusement.

I recognized what this thing was. It was a dragon. A young hatchling who hadn't grown legs yet, so it crawled on its scaled belly. They were still large, despite being infants. Rumors say that dragons are the size of mountains. Others say that they are mountains.

Like the rest of its kind, this dragon could breathe flames. In a breath, it could scorch this entire street. Even as it simply sniffed onto the merchants, the roof of their booth caught fire.

Dragon attacks were common. No one knows where they came from, but one day they just appeared. If it weren for the alliance between the four kingdoms, the dragons would rule over us humans.

As I watched this hatchling crawl up to these merchants, licking its maw, you could imagine what I did.

I turned and ran.

What, you thought I'd take this thing on, alone? That way I can ascend through the ranks until I become the strongest mage, being completely overpowered to the point I become a legend?

Silly reader, haven't you been paying attention?

I don't care about being powerful. Power leads to unhappiness. Power is dangerous. Power took my parents from me. I wasn't going to let it claim me.
