Aunt May looked at Alex Ray standing before her and felt that he was the most normal person in the restaurant.
She was just about to ask him about work when Peter Parker, seated beside him, suddenly asked curiously, "Excuse me, are you superheroes? That's so cool!"
As soon as Peter walked in, he noticed Deadpool's strange costume and Wanda's glowing eyes. But instead of being scared, the teenage boy was filled with curiosity.
Everyone was momentarily stunned by Peter's question. No one expected a kid to be so blunt.
Aunt May quickly covered Peter's mouth and smiled awkwardly at Alex and the others. "Kids don't know better. Sorry for the awkward question."
Deadpool suddenly stood up, strutted toward Peter, and struck a dramatic pose.
"That's right, kid. Didn't expect you to have such sharp eyes! You're looking at the strongest superhero hereâDeadpool!"
He was clearly pleased with Peter and spoke with over-the-top confidence.
Alex pulled Deadpool away and said to Peter, "We're not superheroes. We're just ordinary people."
Alex had no desire to be a superhero. That usually meant getting tangled in massive problems.
Peter looked at Alex, who indeed seemed like a regular guy, and couldn't understand how someone so... normal could be the boss here.
To his surprise, the boss wasn't the flashy superhero-looking guyâDeadpool.
Alex looked at young Peterâwho hadn't become Spider-Man yetâand smiled. His eyes carried a depth that couldn't be put into words.
"The life of a superhero isn't as glamorous as it looks. Sometimes, living as an ordinary person and having a peaceful life... that's a kind of happiness."
But Peter's favorability toward Alex instantly dropped.
He strongly disagreed. After all, every kid dreamed of becoming a superhero.
Peter puffed out his chest and said firmly, "I don't want an ordinary life! I will become a superhero!"
Wanda looked at Peter with interest. Given what she knew about the multiverse, she wondered: could this boy be this universe's Spider-Man?
Alex shook his head slightly. Peter was still too young. And in this universe, there likely wasn't an Uncle Ben to be sacrificed. That role might fall on Aunt May instead.
He glanced at Aunt May standing beside him, eyes flickering with a hint of pity.
Deadpool caught his expression and strolled over, patting Peter on the shoulder.
His eyes sparkled mischievously. "I like you, kid. When you're ready to become a real superhero, I'll be your mentor."
Then, pulling out a bouquet of roses from seemingly nowhere, he turned to Aunt May, who was clearly flustered.
"Tell me, Miss May... are you single? Doesn't matter if you're not! If you're willing, I'll help train the kidâwith you by my side!"
Ever since Deadpool had his face healed by the Horse Talisman, he looked much more attractive. Aunt May blushed at his brazen flirtation.
But the moment he finished, Peterâwho had once admired people like Deadpoolâstepped in front of Aunt May, furious.
He shouted, "Let's go, Aunt May! These people aren't good!"
He grabbed her hand and turned to leave.
Alex saw this and realized his newly hired waitress might just walk out the doorâthanks to Deadpool.
Without hesitation, he kicked Deadpool aside and turned to Aunt May.
"Waiters here get room and board included!"
Then he quickly pulled over Marcus and John Wickâtwo of the more reasonable peopleâand pointed to them.
"These two are our tenants and employees. Most of us are regular folks like me. That guy just nowâhe's an outlier."
Aunt May paused mid-step. The offer of free room and board was tempting, especially given her current financial situation. That's why she'd even come to Hell's Kitchen in the first place.
Still, she eyed Alex with suspicion. "Free room and board for a waitress? That sounds too generous."
In her mind, she wondered if Alex was just interested in her romantically.
Wanda, standing nearby, suddenly felt a twinge of jealousy.
She looked down at herself, then at Aunt May, and instantly noticed the difference in their appeal.
Then she glanced at Alex again and started questioning if she had misunderstood his motives.
Alex, seeing their expressions, instantly felt misunderstood and hurried to clarify.
"We really do need waitstaff. Our team members are always out doing other things, so it's hard to keep the store running at full capacity."
"And yes, we offer room and board for employees. It's not about anything else. I can tell you've had a hard time raising a kid. Don't worryâI'm not the kind of guy you're imagining."
"I'm guessing you came to Hell's Kitchen for the new school opening?"
Aunt May nodded. "Yeah, I heard the school here is free, and I want to enroll Peter."
Alex smiled. "I'm the founder of that school. So rest assured. It's just down the street. You'll be able to check in on Peter easily."
That surprised Aunt May. She hadn't expected Alex to be the school's founder.
"I'm willing to stay," she said. With that, her worries were put to rest. A man capable of opening a school wouldn't be interested in a worn-out woman like her.
Alex nodded and called out, "Pietro! Take them upstairs, help them pick a room, and explain the daily routine."
He watched as Pietro, Aunt May, and the ever-watchful Peter headed toward the elevator. Of course, Deadpool trailed behind, eager to keep inserting himself into the situation.
"Alright," Alex said to the others. "We lost some time earlier. While I'm away, everyone needs to stay on task."
An hour later,
After giving final instructions, Alex rushed upstairs to pack. He had business to attend to elsewhere.
One by one, everyone left the restaurant. Except for Wanda.
She lingered, unwilling to leave. Watching Alex's hurried movements filled her with unease and helplessness.
When Alex came back downstairs, suitcase in hand, he saw Wanda still standing there. He immediately knew what she was thinking.
He approached her and gently patted her on the shoulder.
"I'll be back soon. Don't worry. Hell's Kitchen is yours to manage for now."
Wanda looked at him, eyes filled with worry and reluctant acceptance.
She knew this journey could mean danger, but she also understoodâit was something he had to do.
She gave a silent nod. No words. Just her gaze, fixed on him.
Then, behind Alex, a massive golden ring of light appeared, engulfing everything in its glow.
Wanda stared in awe as Alex walked into the Sling Ring portal and vanished from sight.
