Chapter 7 - Thread of the Unremembered

Kai Mercer

When I awoke, I was in a bed looking at an unfamiliar ceiling.

I sat up but my head started throbbing again, so I lay back down. I close my eyes and tried to focus on the vision.

I was older, and so were the people around me. The only person I recognized was Lyra.

We made our way up to an ornate door that had the same symbols as the courtroom.

Then my head started throbbing even more and I lost focus on the vision.

"Ow, why does my head hurt so much more when I try to focus on this vision compared to the past one." I said to no one in particular.

Then I heard the voice of the demon lady. "It's because it's from a past cycle." Her voice was smooth yet it had a sharp undertone to it.

"Past cycle?" My head started throbbing again. I clinched my eyes shut and let the pain recede. "What do you mean, past cycle?"

"This isn't the first time you've lived through this, however, it's the first time you've made it this far since your first try." She said, the sharp undertone in her voice was gone, replaced by something kinder.

"So, what does all of this mean?" I asked.

"I cannot answer that right now." She said simply.

"Great." I said with no enthusiasm in my voice. "So what do I do now? And where are we."

"First, I will take you to places you have been to see if that will spark any memories. But you have to be careful of Lyra. As long as that rune is still on her body, she will try to kill you. You're runes are connected, the more memories you unlock, the weaker her seal gets, and the more powerful she becomes."

"So, I just need to get all my memories back? Will that undo our runes?"

"I can't say for certain, but that is the most likely outcome." Her voice was flat.

"So why did you help me?" I asked, my eyes narrowing, "The last time a demon said he would help me, he lied to me."

"I guess you're talking about the council? The "demons" on the council aren't really demons, the same goes for the humans and angels on the council. They are more like gods who watch over the three worlds."

"So then why did the responsiblity of saving the three worlds into me?" I asked, anger creeping into my words.

"Fate." She said.

"Fate this, fate that, I want a real answer." I paused letting all the anger I've held in until now burst forth, "Why?" Power erupted from me, an aura of unmistakable and blatant rage surrounded me.

The demon flinched back and let out a deep sigh to compose herself. "You're heritage is special. I can't tell you yet, but it's something you'll find out along the way during your travels."

"I guess I can accept that answer for now." I said letting rage retreat.

"Now then get some more rest, when your head is feeling better, we'll start moving." She said, almost motherly.

"Alright."

I felt the grip of unconsciousness grab ahold of me and pull me into a deep sleep.

When I awoke, I was back at the door with Lyra and the three other people.

Lyra was to my right. To my left was a handsome man with brown hair that was parted in the middle, brown eyes, and he had black armour on. I could see his bulky build even through his armour. He had a short sword in one hand and a big titanium shield in the other.

To his left was a pale, skinny, and sickly looking guy with bags under his eyes. He had unkempt black hair, with yellow eyes. He was holding a staff with a yellow gem at the tip.

To Lyra's right, was a beautiful girl with braided black hair, she had dark blue eyes. She had a long sword in her hands and blue armour on.

"Let's go." I said simply, before pushing the doors open.

The six figures were all behind their respective seats.

I glared at all of them, but I glared more at the demon-looking guy who had been answering all my questions.

Then a bright flash blinded me. The next thing I knew, Lyra was captured, and all my other companions were dead, laying in a pool of their own blood.

"You have failed to end this war. Forfeit your life and the girl will live, or have a rune placed on you and the girl. Your rune will seal all your memories, while her rune will seal her power. However, she will attack you if you start remembering." The demon-looking man said.

Without hesitation, I said, "Kill me. Let her live."

Lyra screamed, "NO! Kai, I won't you let you die, I would rather lose all my power than to see you die."

The devil smirked, knowing Lyra didn't hear second part of her rune. But before I could speak up, I felt a burning pain above my belly button. I let out a pained scream and Lyra did as well.

Then everything faded to black.

My eyes flew open, and I shot up straight. I was bresthing heavily, sweat rolling down face, and the bed was drenched.

"I see you had pretty intense dream." The demon lady's voice pierced the darkness of the room.

"I guess you could say that." I said through heavy breaths.

I eventually calmed down, and realized I never got her name.

"Oh, by the way, what's your name?"

"Mey." She said, a hint of sadness in her voice.

"Let's get going then, Mey." I said.

"Alright."

We made our way to the door of whatever building we were staying at.

"Are you sure you're ready?" She asked.

"As ready as I'll ever be."

She opened the door, and the rays of sunlight wrapped around me like a warm embrace. I don't know how long it's been since I've saw the sun, but I did know that it felt nice, even though it blinded me for a couple of seconds.

I put my hand up to cover the sun. I saw a ruined city. Buildings were broken, glass shards were all over the streets, and rubble lined the sidewalk. It was like a ghost town from the stories I used to read in the school library.

"Wow!" I said simply, to amazed to say anything else. I then composed myself and asked, "I guess there was a big fight here?"

"More than just a mere 'big fight'. This was the last city that was taken over before you awoke." Mey said. "It was the last city in the human realm, other than your city."

We walked through the streets of the ruined city, making sure not to step on a glass shard, and stepping over rubble.

I was looking at the broken skyscrapers, imagining demons and angels flying through them, slashing at each other.

Even though the city was ruined, it was still full of beauty, and culture.

We eventually walked up to a church.

"This is where your parents got married." She said calmly.

"I don't remember much of my parents. Can you tell me more about them?" I asked. I knew she said I would figure out eventually, but I was hoping that she could at least tell me what they looked like, but my hopes were dashed with her next words.

"No." She said simply. "Like I said, you'll find out during your travels."

She kept walking. I was wondering what the point of that was, since she couldn't tell me about my parents, or she wouldn't. I pushed the thought to the back of my mind and continued to follow her.

We made our way to a hospital, and I could only guess that this was where I was born. Her next words confirmed that.

"This is where you were born." She said.

"I kind of guessed that." I said.

"Ah, smart boy." She said.

We then continued to walk. She then stopped and turned back to me and spoke.

"Have you had any memories come back to you?"

I looked confused and asked, "Was I supposed to?"

"Yes, but it's fine, you'll remember soon enough."

"You know, I never asked you how you know so much about me." I said.

She had a sad expression on her face before quickly turning around. I heard her let out a deep sigh, possibly to calm herself. Then she turned around.

"I cannot tell you that." She said calmly, but there was still a hint of sadness on her face and in her words.

We made our way back to the building that I woke up in.

I got into bed, and instantly thought about the vision.

What am I going to do about Lyra? Now that I know why she attacked me, and that she'll do it again.

I guess I need to just get all memories back.
