Chapter 20 - Pressure

The pressure exerted by the demon hunters on Wei Lili seemed immense. Despite the vampire girl's constant efforts to appear indifferent, her tension and worry were evident even to Kevin, who was usually quite oblivious.

Wei Lili voluntarily offered that if the demon hunters really appeared in this city, she would leave immediately to avoid endangering the innocent. To be honest, Kevin was quite moved to hear this. Although vampires in legends were often depicted as treacherous and brutal, Wei Lili was obviously different. Kevin didn't know what other vampires were like, but at least the one he knew wasn't bad.

Of course, while he was moved, he couldn't really let Wei Lili leave like that. He still had three printed pieces of paper called "Celestial Contracts" in his pocket. If the unusual creatures in his house really left, he wouldn't be able to explain it to Raven 12345. "Don't worry, just stay here comfortably. Even if there really are demon hunters, I'll find a way to deal with it..."

"Where do you get such confidence?" Wei Lili looked at Kevin strangely, wondering how the landlord, who seemed honest and afraid of trouble that morning, suddenly became so responsible. "If it's just to comfort me, forget it. I don't need it. Don't underestimate the demon hunters. They themselves aren't pure-blooded humans, and they won't hesitate too much when it comes to fighting."

"Actually... something happened to me this afternoon. Optimistically speaking, I can't just let you go." After thinking for a moment, Kevin decided that there was no need to hide this from them. He reached into his pocket, took out the pieces of paper, and handed them over. Then he told the two monster girls about his meeting with Raven 12345 that afternoon in detail.

Lily, who was confused at all times, didn't need any attention. Wei Lili, on the other hand, carefully read the labor contract in Kevin's hand, listening to Kevin's story while thinking. Finally, she was stunned. "You... are you serious?"

Kevin shrugged. "Absolutely true. Why would I lie to you?"

"I've heard of the concept of the multiverse before, from you humans," Wei Lili waved the pieces of paper in her hand. "I have to say, your 'science' is quite amazing. So you encountered a supercivilization that claims to rule the multiverse, and they have an organization called the 'Temporal and Spatial Administration Bureau' that specifically manages various worlds. A strange woman named Raven 12345 claims to be a god and asked you to be her assistant. In summary, you are now..." Wei Lili lowered her head and read the contract word by word: "Apprentice Inspector, Temporary Staff Under Review, Non-permanent Apprentice Level, Office of Node en35, Temporal and Spatial Administration Bureau, Hiring Empire of Xiring, Wangbatuo Town..."

Kevin wiped the cold sweat from his forehead. Having someone else read out this sentence was indeed more sweating-inducing than reading it out himself.

Wei Lili was stunned for a moment and said thoughtfully, "Landlord, I know you're under a lot of pressure..."

"I'm serious," Kevin said with a bitter smile. "Not only you, but it took me several hours to reorganize my worldview. Anyway, regardless of what the Temporal and Spatial Administration Bureau actually looks like, that Raven 12345 is definitely someone impressive. If you don't believe me, I'll take you to meet her next time. It shouldn't violate any rules."

Seeing Kevin's serious expression, Wei Lili knew that this matter was probably not a joke. She furrowed her brows and pondered, "I've never heard of such an organization before. I've lived... well, countless years, anyway, many years. I have memories from when humans were still using bronze tools, but I've never heard of a Temporal and Spatial Administration Bureau. I've heard of many so-called gods, but most of them are just humans scaring themselves. And that Raven 12345 you mentioned doesn't sound like a god at all... Strange, where did they come from?"

"I asked her about it too," Kevin nodded. "Raven 12345 said that humans have developed quite well on their own, and she also has other things to busy herself with, so she hasn't paid much attention to what's happening on Earth. She didn't even care when humans were promoting atheism. She only occasionally finds an assistant to help her with some earthly trivia, so humans have never known about the existence of the Empire - oh, she always uses 'Empire' to refer to the gods, which is also a pretty strange thing."

"Let's not think about that for now. Anyway, that Raven asked you to take care of the 'Alien species' at home, right?" Wei Lili handed the papers back to Kevin. "This means she's definitely not on the same side as the demon hunters, which is good for me. It would be even better if she's willing to help when the demon hunters appear."

"The chances of that are probably slim," Kevin shook his head. "According to her, the Empire rarely directly intervenes in any events on Earth, unless humans are suicidal and plan to annihilate themselves. But she'll definitely contact me again. I'll ask her more about it then. I was in such a rush this afternoon that I didn't have time to ask too many questions."

Finally, Kevin chuckled and mocked himself, "Hey, you know, my brain is still like a mess right now."

"It's okay," Wei Lili pointed at Lily, who wasstare blankly next to them. "She's like a mess every day, and she's still alive, isn't she? Being brave and optimistic is the key to living well..."

Lily jumped onto the table with a roar, "Say that again!?"

Wei Lili barely bothered to respond to the werewolf. She seemed to have made a decision and nodded at Kevin, "Anyway, I have to find a way to meet that Raven 12345... She appeared out of nowhere, and she seems to know a lot about the relationship between Alien species and humans. I have to ask her." Then a hint of embarrassment appeared on Wei Lili's face, "Actually, we don't live very well in this world. Because of the frequent activities of demon hunters, and the fact that ordinary humans have become increasingly difficult to deal with in the last few hundred years, the Alien species that were originally at the top of the food chain have become marginalized creatures. We don't even have our own historical inheritance, and we're severely isolated from each other. So many things about our own race can only be found in human records. Like this werewolf - she's never seen her own kindred in her entire life. She only found out she was a werewolf from human stories. I don't want to become as ignorant as her."

Kevin knew that Wei Lili wanted to inquire about the whereabouts of her other kinsfolk from Raven 12345. Considering Raven 12345's ability to keep silent even when chatting nonsense, he didn't think Wei Lili had much of a chance, but in the end, he didn't say anything.

At this moment, Lily finally recovered from her dazed state, and the first thing she thought of was, "Hey landlord, shall we eat?"

Kevin: "..."

He suddenly felt a little envious of this canine creature with its exceptionally simple and straightforward way of life and thinking.

Wei Lili also gave Lily a disdainful glance before standing up with a smile, "I'll cook today. After all, I'm kind of freeloading here. How about I take care of cooking and cleaning until I find a job and pay off my debts?"

Kevin quickly waved his hand to show his generosity, "No need, no need. You don't have to be so polite..."

Wei Lili's expression was very serious, "This is my pride as a vampire. I can't live under someone else's roof and freeload all day."

Lily spoke bluntly, "Don't flaunt when you're this poor, okay? Is pride as a vampire about being a maid in exchange for food?"

Kevin quickly grabbed a cookie from the side and stuffed it into Lily's hand to distract the wolf girl. She was so naive and thoughtless, and didn't know how to avoid hitting people where it hurt!

A vampire cooking in the kitchen while a werewolf sits beside him guarding the house made Kevin feel unprecedentedly inflated. It had been a long time since he felt this comfortable since "Gun" came to his house and downgraded him to the second-in-command. So he put his worries aside for the time being, brewed himself a pot of hot tea, enjoyed the air conditioning while reading the newspaper, and pretended to be a very important person while waiting for dinner. Lily, on the other hand, turned on the TV and started flipping through the channels (canines are just so friendly), happily shouting, "Hey landlord, the TV has a signal now!"

Kevin immediately remembered the half-brick embedded in the TV tower, and his mood plummeted. He realized that he was basically just a high-level housekeeper, and even a housekeeper with a combat power of 5...

When Wei Lili served dinner, Kevin's outlook on life was refreshed once again.
