Chloe could feel the rhythm of the heart pressed against her chest pulsating strongly. As the beats grew fiercer, blood flowed steadily from the wound.
“Allow me to ask you something, Your Grace,” Chloe said.
“Go ahead,” Damien responded.
“Do you… love me?”
Damien fixed his dark, stormy eyes on her without offering a reply. Sensing that she might not muster the courage to ask again, she repeated her question.
“Please answer me, Damien. Do you love me?”
Damien finally broke his silence, his voice low and laced with mockery. “Is that what you want? For me to whisper in your ear that I love you?”
“If your malicious deeds were motivated by love for me, I shall make an effort to forgive you,” Chloe declared, undeterred by his scorn.
“I am sorry to disappoint you, but I do not need your forgiveness.” Damien’s features contorted in what seemed like anger.
“Your Grace, if I cannot forgive someone, I cannot love them either.”
