CHAPTER 4:"Survival of the fittest"

Bright green leaves fell from the tall trees lining the side of the walking path. Sticks made popping noises as William and Elsa stepped on them while walking on the path.
Since their little fight, they both decided not to talk with each other for the rest of the walk. This silence led to both of them going deep into their thoughts — especially William, who was basically putting his body on autopilot while he was busy inside his own mind.
"Tomorrow I will lure her into that burned-down building where those Hell worshipper maniacs stay. Once they take care of her, I won't have any worry of being snitched to the police for robbing by Elsa, and I also won't be accused of murder since that stupid cult will do that job for me. And I can just act as the victim… wow, I really do impress myself sometimes."
While having this inner monologue, William glanced at Elsa to see if he could get a small read from her facial expression, to at least make an educated guess as to what she was thinking about. But it was pointless — her expression continued to be a blank and distant look, like she was sleeping with her eyes open.
William silently sighed and went back into thought.
"Damn, I can usually get a pretty good read on what people are thinking just from their expression and demeanor, but with this girl it's impossible… I need to be careful on how I do this. Even though I doubt she would be much of a physical threat, her unpredictability could be very dangerous for me."
As William continued to monologue to himself while Elsa had her own mysterious thoughts, William suddenly stopped walking, which caused Elsa to also come to a stop and break her blank stare — as now she was focused on William and why he had stopped.
The specific bench that William was looking for had finally been reached. Most of the benches in the park were halfway destroyed by reckless kids that weren't monitored by their parents. The benches had lots of missing pieces of wood that allowed for people to rest their backs, and some even had missing metal legs that were necessary for the bench to stay up.
The bench that William was looking for — and had now just found — was one of the few benches in the park that was still in good condition.
With a big smile, William spoke.
"Alright, I found my bench to sleep on. Now you go find yours."
William was halfway expecting the usual reply, which was to be offended, but at the same time he also now knew that Elsa didn't really act like a normal person, so for him it was a toss-up on what she would do.
"Ok, I will sleep beside your bench on the ground," Elsa said with a very big smile and a voice full of happiness.
Just like William expected, this girl's reply just didn't add up — not only to how a normal person would reply, but also how she should have replied based on her mood just a few minutes ago.
"Does she have multiple personalities or something like that? Her mood swings just seem so whack — just a minute ago she was saying how miserable I was, and now she's all smiles?… I just don't get it. What is wrong with this woman!"
William clenched his fists for a few seconds before relaxing them, as he finally gave up on understanding what was going on in Elsa's mind. William laid down and pretended to sleep, as he absolutely didn't trust Elsa's intentions.
Meanwhile, Elsa was on the ground with both her hands grabbing her beautiful golden hair and covering her gorgeous doll face. She really didn't want to get her hair and face dirty, so she fell asleep with her hands in a very uncomfortable position — but she didn't seem to care.
After a few hours had passed since they had laid down to sleep, William was finally convinced that Elsa was indeed completely asleep, which released a lot of tension and paranoia from his mind. Now that he was relaxed and knew that Elsa was fully asleep and wasn't planning anything, he had some time to think and then go to sleep finally.
"I have the plan all laid out for tomorrow… whether it succeeds or not is up to luck."
After that thought, William slightly lifted his head and just started to scan the barely visible park that was covered by the darkness of the night. He heard small birds making chirping noises up in the trees. He also heard the small clicking sounds made by the bugs crawling around the bench he was laying on — which made him gag a little.
William set his head back down on the hard wooden boards that made up the bench. He then reached into his pocket and pulled out the same photo that he was staring at while sitting in the middle of the pouring rain. He lifted the photo right above his face and stared at it.
"I am like this because of you."
William glanced down at the sleeping blonde girl lying on the grass, and then he glanced back at the photo.
"I destroy everyone I meet — either physically or mentally… and I do that because of you."
William slowly put the photo back into his pocket and just lay there, looking up at the beautiful white moon and the shining stars that lit up the sky like a Christmas tree. And after some minutes of staring up at the sky, his eyelids slowly but surely started to close.
He had finally fallen asleep.
