Chapter 9 - Subject

It's not possible.

How could he still be alive after what happened to him? I saw him die down there. Exploded skull, toasted body. But seeing him now, he looked like a completely new person from before.

He is, by the way topless, just a wrapped of white clothing around his lower body. He toasted down there the last I checked, but seeing him now, not even a sign of burn or holes in his body are seen.

It almost seemed like; he didn't even die.

He dropped the gun down and walked barefoot toward Nolan. I was just like a statue when he passes by me, and all I could do is to watch.

When he's infront of the dead body. He begun kicking it, making sure it's really dead or something. Then he sighed. Eyes still on the corpse, he suddenly asked me. "What's your name, old man?"

I was a bit hesitant to answer.

"Tobias." But I eventually did over time.

Then he gazed over his shoulder, smirking. "I know what you're thinking."

"Why are you still alive? I obviously saw you die."

He giggled. Looking so amused on how confused my face is right now. This is a weird feeling, talking to a dead man. It's almost like a dream. Or maybe this is really a dream.

"You really want to know? Well. Let me demonstrate a little. Don't blink." Giving me a hint of caution by how he stayed staring at me while saying that.

I did what he said. I never let my sight off of him. And there I saw how his right hand started growing claws like little knives.

Bone configuration. This is a rare ability. It's almost impossible to be inherited by generations and kins, not unless he's from a laboratory. Fin never told me who this guy really is. Or does he even know who this man really is in the first place.

This guy is not normal. He's just like any other heroes or unknown thugs around the city. But the shocking part's only beginning from this point on. When this man, without a glint of hesitation, stabs his own side of the head by his claws. Hand buried all through his brain as blood dripped excessively out of his self-inflicted wound.

My mouth gaped in disbelief. This is insane. But like before, I still watched him like I'm staring at a wall. A shockingly dark type of wall. His hand moved inside his brain like searching for something inside. And when he finally took out his hand out, he showed me a hard-drive soaked completely in blood.

My eyes saw an opportunity. With just a spur of the moment, my body reacted on its own. Using my ability, I forced the air by stealing the hard-drive away from his hand.

I could almost feel that wet and sticky hard-drive to be gripped tightly in my hand, when Shin appeared right infront of me. It terrified me, even my muscles stopped moving, and in exchange couldn't dodge the kick to my stomach.

I flew and hits the wall meters away from him. I groaned as I tried standing again. I think I broke some of my ribs. I gasped for air. The pain's almost unbearable.

Midair, he catches the sticky hard-drive and pushed it back inside his head. "Such a shame. I thought I could trusts you but you're actually just like Nolan. Are you related or something?"

Then his holed skull started regenerating until it came back to normal like nothing ever happened.

There's no doubt about it. He's definitely a subject. I don't know everything about them, but probably, based on what I remembered, this man's ability was undoubtedly among the deadliest one.

He had high speed control. A special bone configuration ability and the most annoying part is, he can regenerate any sorts of injuries within seconds.

If this man's the holder of the hard-drive, I mean literally holding it inside him. This mission's going to be troublesome. Decapitating him completely might do the trick, but that's easier said than done. But if that's the only way to left him immobile, I will never hesitate to try.

"Tell me something, old man. Are you somehow acquainted with my father or something?" He cracked his neck along with a deep sigh. Relieve of the pain he must have been secretly enduring in the healing process.

"I'm not."

I left him in a deep thinking. "Then who are you? This is the first time I saw someone like you, and you look like you're never going to join me, aren't you?"

"You should know that I'm not obliged to tell you anything."

He smirked. "But you told me your name. Mr. Tobias Valentine."

Yeah. It's a mistake. Dammit, Tobias. I hope that's just as far as he can get from me. But if he'll investigate my past based solely on that name, I'll be damned.

"How do you think everyone will respond when they know that the head captain of Hero Section 2 is dead? Or worse, how will the world respond if a man named Tobias Valentine killed him?" He said pointing at me, "and then, I'll upload a video feed as a proof, that'll just heat things up, I'm sure."

My eyes squinted, "Video feed? What do you mean video feed?"

His smile widened, and my heart pounded in curiosity. He then pointed his thumb over his shoulder, and there I saw a shadow on a corner of this place. It's a CCTV camera. There's five of them around here. How did I not notice them? In my surprise, I desperately crashed them with my power.

"That's pointless," he chuckled. "The feeds are already saved before you even know it. And you'll never find where."

"You can't do this!"

"Obviously I can." Then his eyes squinted, "unless you want to tell me who sent you to steal the hard-drive."

"If I tell you. Would you promise not to frame me?"

"Foolish." Then in a blink, he passed right behind me. Both our backs facing each other, "it depends, old man."

I heaved a deep sigh. I don't know. What should I do at this point? This is so frustrating and the hole's getting deeper and deeper as I continued to fall. I'm never getting out of this.

"Fin sent me."

"Fin! Of course! So he's your friend! I knew he would do something like this, but he's shockingly too early." He exclaimed, followed by a loud laugh.

"You're pathetic—just like your friend." He faced me. One hand placed on his waist and the other on my shoulder, "but let's make this much more interesting, shall we? We don't want to spoil the fun too much, I tell you."

That arrogant, smiling face of him could only make me hate my self even more. "Aw, don't be such a killjoy, old man. You should see yourself in the mirror right now. You looked exactly like a grumpy geezer with attitude issues, calm down a little bit."

He then stepped backward, hands now clasping behind him. "I want you to do something for me. Tobias Valentine. And if you failed to do it within a day, I'll do it myself, along with spreading the footage of you, killing Nolan. A few editing would suffice. I owned the footage so framing you would be just a piece of cake."

My hands formed a tight fist. This is not good.
