The following day, both of them came back to the library to learn magic. Yesterday's incident still left an awkward tension between them. The two had not talked with each other much after that, and even now, when Ellie was teaching Lucas about magic, neither of them said a single word outside of the information from Ellie's books.
"Magic can be divided into 7 levels, and each level shows how much you can control mana inside and outside of your body. For level 1 users, they are mostly those who only push mana out and form any kind of element they are most comfortable with. From level 2 onward, the magic will become more complex, and that's when spells start to form. From level 3, magic will take more preparation and some even require drawing magic circles to perform – this is also the level that most normal people can reach. I am expecting you to at least be at this level," said Ellie.
As Lucas heard what Ellie just said, he felt a little disappointed, and also some anger, as she looked down so much on him.
"Why only level 3? Aren't I the host of Wrath?" Lucas questioned back, but Ellie only answered with even more disappointment.
"Look back at yourself. You are a werewolf, tiny-brained guy. It's already lucky that you can even use magic. I'm not even sure you can do level 2 magic or not, so please keep your arrogance down before I start thinking about killing you again."
The awkward silence came back once again. Shortly after, Ellie continued with her lecture:
"From level 4, magic becomes even more complex and needs a huge amount of mana. Normal humans that borrow magic from divine beings will not be able to perform these unless they have any sacrifice to pay up for their lack of mana."
This suddenly reminded Lucas of that fateful night. All of this wouldn't have happened if Lucas hadn't been the "material" for some stupid level 4 magic. Though this bad mood wouldn't stop him from learning magic. After all, magic is what he had aimed for in the last several years.
"For level 5 magic, this is the level where it's almost impossible for humans to do anything to perform. This level of magic, though, is only basic magic for high-rank demons and divine beings. As for level 6, these will cost them something to perform, as the price to upgrade their magic 1 level higher from 5 to 6."
"You're saying high-rank demons and divine beings can at most do level 6 magic? Then what about level 7?"
With a short pause, Ellie answered the question short and clear. "God magic."
Lucas went completely silent when he heard that term. At school, he had already learned about the divine beings, but gods — they were another story. Gods are those ascendants who got recognized and worshipped by the entire world. They transcend and become one with the concept they represent. Those who have become gods can only be killed if there is no one left in this world who has faith in them. Moreover, there are also beings even stronger than gods, which people call "The Constellation." These beings, besides their names, have no known information about their powers or what they could do.
Back to the present, after Ellie had introduced all 7 levels of magic to Lucas, she performed a protective spell on the entire library.
"Okay, now I can play with magic without destroying this collection," smiled Ellie as she looked at Lucas with a creepy expression. Before Lucas could react, Ellie had already finished her chanting — a total of 3 fireballs, 2 water blades, and an ice spear appeared around her, and then, following Ellie's hand, pointed directly at Lucas.
"Are you kidding me???" Lucas immediately ran away from all those attacks. He slid behind a bookshelf and tried to catch his breath, but before he could do anything, a fireball appeared on top of his head.
"Are you serious??? They can track me too???" Before Lucas could dodge the fireball, it slid past his head, leaving a small burn on his face. Lucas continued to run around, but in front of him, another 2 ice spikes were heading straight at him, while behind him, 2 pieces of earth spheres were also speeding up to catch him.
'You really force me to go all out, huh?' Lucas then took out the glass and prepared for his counterattack. Lines of magic symbols once again appeared in front of his eye. 'Just as I expected! These magic attacks actually count as objects too! But they are organized in… a circle?' Different from normal objects, these "magic" lines formed into a magic circle and in the middle of them were — 'Those weird symbols!!!! But first, I need to deal with these.'
Lucas then took out his razor knife and headed toward the 2 ice spikes. As he cut through the connecting points of the lines, both of them shattered. Lucas then kept on running toward another shelf, letting the earth spheres smash into it.
Ellie then spoke out loud: "I will continue attacking you with these basic level 1 magic spells until you are able to use any element to strike back. Don't worry, it may hurt, but I won't kill you."
'She's seriously mad about yesterday!! She's gonna kill me, isn't she?'
Before Lucas could take a break, another wave of fireballs flew toward him. Not stopping there, something that looked like a leaf — but traveled super quickly — cut through his face, and there were many of them too. Lucas managed to destroy some of the fireballs attacking him, but getting his razor knife near the fireball also made his hand burn a lot.
'I need to find my element before she kills me, but how???'
Lucas suddenly realized something. If he treated himself as an "object" too, would he succeed? He then looked around his body and saw that there were also tons of lines of symbols covering his body. When he put his hand over his chest, a runic symbol floated out from his body — the same as the ice attribute. Without hesitation, Lucas tried to recreate the ice shard spell that Ellie had thrown at him. He tried to remember the magic circle, then carefully reshaped those lines around him into that magic circle while being chased by another wave of fireballs. Several seconds later, Lucas luckily completed the circle and placed it directly in his hand. The circle carved in, and as soon as it became one with him, he felt a force that kept pulling his energy toward the circle. Lucas then let his body follow the flow, and his hand started to emit a blue light.
'This feeling… Mana reaction!!!'
Ellie suddenly sensed a change in mana flow at Lucas's location. She smiled, then flew toward there. To her surprise, all of her fireballs had been canceled out, and some of the leaf razors she threw at Lucas also froze. Under where the werewolf stood, a blue symbol of a snowflake could be seen, and all nearby objects were also covered in a small layer of ice. Ellie laughed:
"Congratulations Lucas, you've learned how to use your very first basic level 1 ice magic — Frostbite."
