Chapter 4 - The flow of Mana

Yesterday's lesson with Ellie had a great impact on Lucas. Not only did it help him use his first-ever spell, but it also helped him understand his "right eye" better. Lucas was still not sure if he could completely destroy a spell by cutting through its connection spot or not, as all he did was stop some low-level magic—Level 1—and not something a normal person would even wield yet.

For the time being, Lucas kept on messing with the "sandbox mode" to test his limits while letting Ellie handle his magic training.

Back to Ellie. After yesterday's "training," besides feeling happy for her little pet to finally be able to wield some basic magic, there was something lingering in her thoughts:'It's normal for a talented person to be able to use magic, especially those who get to "feel" it directly, but that guy… this is just too fast. Is it because of that thing?'

As Ellie was still deep in thought, a shadowy figure with red eyes and horns on top of its head appeared in front of her.

"Wrath, did my little pet activate the God Eye yesterday when I was training him?"

"You mean when you tried to beat him up until he became unconscious?" the black figure mocked Ellie.

"Just get straight to the point. I don't have all day for you!"

"Yes, he did, my lady. Of course, I had already suppressed it, or else things might have turned worse."

The answer caused Ellie to pause for a moment. As she feared, the power of Wrath alone wouldn't be enough to keep the eye from growing stronger, and at some point, that power would overpower her.

"Did you tell him how to activate his eye? How could he learn it so fast?"

"My lady, the glass you gave him to control his power—he just needs to look through it to activate his eye."

"You said what?" Even more headache came to Ellie. For her to finally be able to do what Lucas did, it took her 3 months—3 WHOLE MONTHS—and only focusing on controlling it. This guy just did it like breathing!

"But my lady, his eye seems to be... different from yours," the devil added as it saw Ellie spacing out, processing all that information.

Hearing this, Ellie didn't even know how to react, and just let out a big sigh. The devil then told her about Lucas's "little project," which made the girl look even more tired. At this point, Ellie could've fainted just thinking about what she needed to do to stop the worst-case scenario from happening.

'I should make my move now,' thought Ellie, as she walked out of her room and headed toward the library to meet up with Lucas.

In the library, Lucas was still messing with his "little project." From yesterday's incident, Lucas had decided to make some ranged weapon so he could attack from a distance and also disable any incoming spells more easily. He didn't want to hurt his hand torching fireballs like yesterday—and even now, the burn was still visible on his hand (mostly because his fur was white).

After messing around with the trees around the castle, he ended up creating a revolver with the help of 19 trees. The revolver wasn't a normal one either—its bullets could be created and loaded in just several seconds when Lucas used his right eye. Another thing was that he managed to use some of the floating symbols in the air—what he called Elemental Runes—to make bullets for the revolver. With this, he could now shoot out elemental bullets without using magic, a perfect match for his current Level 1 magic that just froze all enemies that got close to him.

Before he could think of a way to test if his gun could actually repel magic, Ellie was already behind him and let out a big sigh.

"Since when did you manage to make that little dangerous toy of yours?"

Lucas's heart felt like it was about to jump out of his chest, as Ellie had entered the library without making even the slightest sound—not the door opening, nor her footsteps. After getting back on track, Lucas now had to answer the question he least wanted to give: his recent discovery about his power.

Seeing the guy unwilling to answer, Ellie took out something from her pocket—a small square piece of glass, the same as Lucas's. She placed it on her left eye. The glass hovered for a few seconds, then turned into a red magic circle, with a symbol of a crescent moon split in half in the center.

"I am the same as you. My eye can see the flow of mana and also allows me to freely manipulate it. That's why I can cast complicated magic without the need for chanting or using rituals. I just need to control the mana around me and force it into what I want," Ellie explained.

After hearing her explanation, Lucas's face froze in confusion—he didn't even make any expression or move a muscle. From the dumb look on his face, Ellie had already confirmed that what she heard from the devil was correct.

"H…h-how did you know that???"

"You used it yesterday in the library, didn't you? If you think that hiding from my eyesight means I won't know what you're doing, then you should just call me a dumb blind girl or something."

At this point, Lucas knew for sure that he couldn't keep this secret from her anymore. From the very beginning, she was the one who helped him control his eye, so it was very normal for her to find out sooner or later. Although Lucas wanted to keep this secret a little longer—he had hoped to use it to fight back against her if she ever made him do something bad, or even tried to get him killed—the current situation just didn't favor him at all.

In the end, Lucas accepted defeat and put on the glass. A blue magic circle appeared on his right eye. From Ellie's point of view, the symbol on Lucas's eye made her heart skip a beat—it was the symbol of an hourglass. Lucas himself clearly didn't know what this meant, but inside Ellie's mind, every single question she had from that fateful night had been answered. She just… didn't want to tell him the truth yet.

Lucas continued showing Ellie his power as he turned some of the books in front of him into a small metal sword. He also explained to Ellie about the floating runes in the air and how he managed to cast magic using those instead of his mana. Lucas then took out an ice rune floating in the air and placed it in his hand. A small snowflake formed and then turned into a cold breeze emitting around the room.

"I would need more of those to form a stronger spell, though," Lucas explained. But the guy didn't realize how shocked Ellie was at that moment.

"H…h-how did you manage to control the flow of mana??? Not only did you control it, but you also turned it into your corresponding element??? Impossible! Even I can't do such a thing!!!"

"Huh?????" Lucas responded in even more confusion. Not only did he not understand a single word that Ellie said, but he also didn't know that this would be the very thing that would help him become the strongest mage of all time.
