Chapter 19 – The Legendary Sucker
Hajime awoke before dawn, the narrow inn room stifling in humidity. He dressed quietly and wrapped an overcoat around himself, then slipped outside into the muted light of Tanzaku Quarters. Lanterns still glowed along cobbled streets as he traced the rumor he'd pieced together: Tsunade, the infamous "Legendary Sucker," could be found, losing again, at a mid-sized gambling den near the western gate.
By the time the alley pulled him into view of the Blue Wisteria house, muted laughter and dice clatter drifted outward. Hajime paused, closed his eyes, and inhaled deeply. This wasn't just a meeting, it was a test. He stepped through the doorway.
Inside, the den buzzed with last night's ghosts. A haze of smoke curled from hidden lamps, mingling with the scent of overripe fruit and stale tobacco. Most tables lay empty. Near the far wall, a low table held a pile of half-dominoes and coins. And there, as anticipated, Tsunade sat, blinking whiskey-clear eyes at the dice in her hand.
Shizune was by her side, alert to the slightest movement. Tsunade looked up, her gaze flicking to the door.
"Not the bartender," she muttered, turning away, or so she thought.
Hajime advanced with measured calm. "Tsunade Senju? I want To be Your Student."
Her eyes narrowed. She let the dice fall. They clattered, and she half-smiled. "I don't take students. Go bother someone else."
He bowed slightly. "Then I'll wait. I'll learn by watching. Even if I only see you gamble, I will."
Tsunade snorted. "Foolish." She flipped her wrist, shattering her sake bottle on the table. Glass skittered like broken promises. Her words sliced through the tension: "There's nothing left to teach."
Hajime met her glare. "I don't want power. I want knowledge. Medical ninjutsu, learning how to save lives, to heal wounds, to perform surgery. I need to be able to help people I care about, to never stand helpless while someone bleeds out."
A pulse of silence, the heaviest kind. Shizune's expression softened as she watched Tsunade's eyes flicker. Tsunade's posture stiffened, and for a moment, the weight of her past grief pulsed in the space between them. Then she exhaled with a harsh rasp. "Get the hell out."
But Hajime remained rooted. "I'll leave only when you tell me to."
Her glare hardened. Chakra flared faintly, an invitation to violence she wasn't ready to give. Finally, she said, "Fine. Stand outside, like a fool waiting to be mocked."
He bowed. "Thank you." And walked out.
...
The sun climbed as he took his place on the wooden porch. Heat softened his clothes, and soon, rain began, a soft, unrelenting drizzle. Through it all, Hajime sat, unmoving. Travelers scrambled past him. Garnet-skinned runners from afternoon matches gave sidelong glances. A merchant called out curry and rice. The world waned around him; his focus narrowed to the single door behind him.
Shizune slipped out near noon with a towel. "You'll catch a cold."
He shook his head softly. "I'll be fine. Thank you."
She hesitated, concern in her eyes, then returned inside.
The day crept on, lazy and thick with moisture. Yet Hajime never wavered. He didn't sleep, didn't shift, and didn't plead. He simply waited.
...
Night fell again, lantern-lit and damp. The inn's door creaked. Hajime looked up just as Tsunade stepped onto the porch. Her hair was loose, sandals dusted by the long walk from the river's edge. She paused, silent.
Hajime bowed. "Good evening."
Her voice was low. "Tch… idiot.
But she didn't push him off the step, didn't demand he leave.
Inside, Tsunade's steps were heavy with exhaustion. After a moment, Shizune looked over her shoulder as the door shut behind them.
"She's thinking about that kid," Shizune whispered.
Tsunade stared out the window, amber eyes distant. "Another fool chasing ghosts," she murmured.
But the single word resonated less with certainty, and more with something like… possibility.
Far above the trickle of night rain, Hajime remained outside. A single figure, waiting. Not arrogantly. Not fearfully. Just patiently… with intention.
