When I opened my eyes, the unfamiliar weight on my wrists made panic surge through my veins. Cold metal bit into my skin as I yanked against the chains securing me to an ornately carved headboard. My heart hammered against my ribs as I scanned the dimly lit room.
This wasn't the dungeon they'd thrown me in before. The space was luxurious—almost beautiful—with rich tapestries adorning stone walls and plush burgundy bedding beneath me. But the opulence did nothing to soothe my terror.
I was a prisoner in finer accommodations, nothing more.
Footsteps approached from beyond the heavy wooden door, and I frantically pulled at my restraints. The chains rattled but held fast.
