Peter, his heart consumed by desires for money and Mary Jane, ignored Uncle Ben's advice and focused solely on attending the wrestling match.
His thoughts fluttered like dead leaves caught in the windâchaotic, unsettled, and impossible to pin down.
When he stepped into the roaring arena, he was stunned by the sight of tens of thousands of spectators and the electrifying performances of professional wrestlers clashing in the ring.
Their cheers, the thunderous applause, and the raw intensity of the fights sent electric shocks down Peter's spine.
He could almost picture himself standing on that stage, basking in the crowd's adoration, savoring the thrill of victory.
Uncle Ben's advice had long since vanished from his thoughts.
Just as he was about to sign up for the competition, a familiar voice pierced the air: "Is this really a good idea? Have you already forgotten everything Uncle Ben told you?"
Peter's heart skipped a beat. He spun around, searching for the source of the voice.
Finally, his eyes settled on a familiar figureâa face from his past. Alex Ray.
Alex stood in the shadowed corridor with a relaxed smile, but there was a depth in his eyes that sent a chill down Peter's spine.
Confusion and unease crept across Peter's face. Why was Alex here? How did he know about the conversation with Uncle Ben?
"You⊠why are you here?" Peter asked, his voice tinged with nervousness.
Was Alex stalking him? Peter's instincts flared with alarm. Had Alex known about his every move?
Alex, sensing Peter's suspicion, chuckled and replied, "Relax. I just happened to pass by and saw your uncle talking with you in the car. Looked like things were getting heated, so I figured he was giving you one of his lectures."
Hearing Alex's explanation, Peter's tense nerves eased a bit.
So it was just a coincidence. He'd jumped to conclusions. He had almost convinced himself Alex was a creepy stalker.
"Why? You seem pretty into this competition. Planning to throw your hat in the ring?" Alex asked, a teasing glint in his eyes.
Peter quickly waved his hands. "No, no, I'm just watching. Wrestling's always been kinda interesting to me."
He had no intention of revealing his true intentionsâif Alex told Uncle Ben, it would be game over. Ben would definitely shut the whole thing down.
"How about we watch together?" Alex offered casually, though he already knew Peter intended to join the fight. He just wanted to see how Peter would wriggle out of it.
"No, no, it's fine. You go ahead and enjoy. I gotta hit the restroom first." Peter refused quickly.
Watching the match with Alex would kill any chance of joining unnoticedâand without the fight, there'd be no shot at the $3,000 prize. No car. No Mary Jane.
With that, Peter turned and rushed off, leaving Alex behind.
Watching Peter's hurried departure, Alex smiled faintly, almost cryptically.
He knew exactly what Peter would chooseâbut he didn't stop him. Instead, he left him with one final remark: "Whatever choice you make today, just make sure you've thought it through. Or you'll regret it."
Peter frowned, puzzled by Alex's words. Did he know Peter planned to fight?
Shaking his head, Peter brushed off the encounter and made his way to the bathroom to change and register for the competition.
At the registration desk, the woman behind the counter eyed him skepticallyâhis skinny frame and makeshift costume made him look more like a joke than a real contender.
She hesitated, asking again if he was serious about signing up.
Peter nodded firmly and handed over his form without hesitation.
After a brief wait, it was finally his turn to take the stage.
The announcer looked at the next name on the listâ"Human Spider"âand frowned.
Too bland. Too forgettable.
On the spot, he changed it.
"Next up, let's welcome a new challengerâthe dreaded... Spider-Man!" he roared to the crowd.
When Peter stepped into the ring, his thin physique drew a chorus of boos and laughter. The crowd didn't take him seriously at all. They assumed he'd be knocked out in under a minute.
The bell rangâand Peter exploded into action.
He unleashed every move he'd learned from Alex Ray during yesterday's brutal training session. His strikes were clean and sharp. His footwork was swift. His reflexes were spider-like.
Each dodge, each counter left the seasoned wrestler stumbling. Peter moved with unexpected precision, weaving through attacks and exploiting every opening.
He took the pro wrestler down with surprising ease.
The audience fell into stunned silenceâthen erupted with thunderous cheers.
No one had expected such power and skill from a skinny teenager. The cheers grew louder, a wall of sound engulfing the arena.
Peter stood tall in the ring, basking in the glory.
He knew this victoryâthis strengthâwas thanks to the training he'd endured from the man known as Kamen Rider.
That agonizing experience had forged something new within him.
And now, it had paid off.
Peter grinned. The $3,000 prize was as good as his. He'd get his car. He'd impress Mary Jane.
But reality hit fast and hard.
"Why is it only a hundred bucks? I thought it was supposed to be three thousand?" Peter asked the payout manager, confused and frustrated.
The man scoffed. "Open your eyes, genius. It was three minutes for three thousand. You lasted two. You're lucky you're getting anything."
His voice was cold, dismissive.
Peter's chest tightened with fury and helplessness. He'd been played.
He needed that money. Desperately.
Swallowing his pride, he tried to negotiate. "Come on, man, can't you at leastâ"
"Nope," the man cut him off, his expression like stone. "Not my problem."
It was like a punch to the gut.
Peter turned and stormed off, fists clenched in silent rage.
As he waited for the elevator, a man sprinted past himâa thief in action.
Peter glanced over his shoulder.
Inside, chaos had erupted. The payout manager was down, wallet gone.
Peter stood frozen, watching the aftermath unfold. Instead of fear or sympathy, something else bubbled up inside him.
Satisfaction.
The man who had just cheated him was now getting robbed himself.
So when the man cried out to Peter, "Stop him! He's getting away!"
Peter met his gaze coldly and echoed the man's own words: "Not my problem."
The thief vanished down the elevator shaft.
The man stared at Peter, furious and defeated.
Peter just looked away, biting back a bitter smile.
He deserved it.
What Peter didn't know was that this momentâthis single choiceâwould come at a cost he could never imagine.
