Just as Peter was about to return to the spot where he'd planned to wait for Uncle Ben that morning,he noticed a large crowd gathering ahead. Curious, he walked forward.
A wave of unease hit him. Pushing through the crowd in a hurry, Peter forced his way to the front.
When he reached the first row, a police officer blocked his path.
Peter looked past the officerāand froze. Then he shouted, "That's my uncle!" He broke free of the officer's grip, dropped to his knees, and examined Uncle Ben's body on the ground.
Tears already welling, Peter turned to the officer and demanded through sobs, "What happened? What the hell happened?!"
He couldn't understand. Why was Uncle Ben lying here, motionless, surrounded by strangers?
The officer replied calmly, "He was shot during a carjacking. We've already called an ambulance. It's on the way."
Peter's eyes widened in disbelief. He couldn't accept it. His uncleārobbed? Shot?
"Uncle Ben... Uncle Ben!" Peter cried, calling his name over and over, as if trying to wake him with the force of his voice.
The next moment, Peter found himself no longer on the street. The scene had changed completely. Uncle Ben now lay on a bed in a dimly lit room.
Everything around him was unfamiliar, eerie even. A wave of panic surged through him. He looked around frantically for anything recognizableābut nothing felt real.
Then, a steady voice echoed beside him. "Didn't I tell you to think carefully before you acted?"
Peter spun around. Standing in the doorway was Alex Ray, his expression unreadable.
Rage exploded in Peter's chest. He lunged forward and swung at Alex without hesitation.
"What the hell did you do to Uncle Ben? Who are you? What do you want?" he yelled. Each question came out raw and panicked, driven by the fear of losing the only family he had left.
He didn't care how he'd gotten here or what this place was. All that mattered was whether Uncle Ben was still alive.
Alex sidestepped Peter's punch with effortless grace, the same faint smirk playing at his lips.
His voice was calm but carried an undeniable authority. "Are you sure you want to hit me? Because no one else can save your Uncle Ben."
"And this?" Alex gestured around them. "This is my home."
He didn't bother telling Peter how he'd used his Sling Ring to carry both of them here in seconds without attracting attention. That level of effort had slightly tarnished his dramatic entrance.
Note to self: Learn to use the Mirror Dimension next time.
Peter collapsed to the ground, tears streaming down his face. He clasped his hands together and begged, "Youāyou have to be able to save him, right? Please! I'm sorry! Please save him. I'll do anything, I swear!"
He was convinced Alex had powersāanyone who could teleport people without anyone noticing had to have some kind of supernatural ability. And maybe, just maybe, he could bring Uncle Ben back.
Alex glanced at the unconscious man lying on the bed. He spoke slowly, "You know, Uncle Ben could've survived. If you'd stopped that guy in the elevator, this wouldn't have happened."
Peter stood frozen, the words hitting him like a truck. His body trembled. He clutched at his chest as if trying to hold his heart together.
Tears poured from his eyes. He knelt again and lowered his head to the ground, his voice hoarse and desperate: "Please⦠Alex, please save him. I know I messed upāI know it's my fault. Just let him live. I'll do anythingā¦"
Guilt ripped through him like barbed wire. His uncle had been shot because of him. He'd let the robber go.
Alex stood there, unmoved by Peter's anguish.
He said coldly, "Wouldn't life be easier without him? No one nagging you, no one holding you back. You can do whatever you want."
It was like a knife through Peter's chest. He didn't stop kneeling. His forehead struck the floor again and again, sweat and tears running down his face in streams.
"I need Uncle Ben! I can'tāI can't live without him. I'm sorry. I know I was wrong. Please, Alex, I'm begging you!"
But Alex's expression didn't change. His voice remained icy. "People always wait until it's too late to appreciate what they have. That's not my problem."
With that, he turned and walked out of the room, leaving Peter sobbing on the floor.
He closed the door with a quiet click and tossed a talismanāshaped like a horseāinto Deadpool's hands.
Deadpool had been leaning casually against the wall, eavesdropping the entire time.
Of course Alex had the power to save Uncle Ben. He just didn't want to show his hand too early.
All across the multiverse, Uncle Bens were doomed to die. But Alex wasn't buying into that fate. He wanted to try saving at least one.
Did Uncle Ben really have to die before Peter could grow up? Alex didn't think so.
That's why, the very moment he'd first seen Uncle Ben, he'd used the Horse Talisman to heal him.
As for why he didn't use a Senzu Bean? He only had two leftāthose were emergency stock. No way he was wasting one.
And why hadn't he told Peter?
Well, partly to teach the kid a brutal life lesson. And partly because Uncle Ben, now healed, needed to rest. Let Peter suffer a littleābuild some character.
Deadpool, arms crossed and grin plastered across his face, whispered, "Kid's bawling like a soap opera lead. I kind of want to go in and take pictures."
Inside, Peter remained by Uncle Ben's side, face wet with regret. His mind replayed the moment he'd let the thief goāthe moment he'd muttered, "That's none of my business."
That decision had led to this.
"I'm sorry, Uncle Benā¦" Peter whispered, clutching his hand.
Just then, a weak, familiar voice broke through his despair. "Peter⦠I'm fine. Don't cry."
Peter froze, heart skipping a beat.
He looked upāand saw Uncle Ben slowly opening his eyes.
"Uncle Ben?" Peter gasped, overwhelmed with disbelief and joy.
His uncle was pale but breathing. Alive.
Uncle Ben gave a faint smile. "I'm not sure what happened. Feels like someone saved me."
His voice was soft, filled with gratitude and confusion.
He'd thought this was the end. But somehow, he was still here.
Peter's tears turned to relief. The crushing weight in his chest finally lifted.
He looked toward the door. He thought he saw Alex Ray's silhouette beyond it.
His emotions were a mix of gratitudeāand deep questions.
Who was Alex? How had he done it?
Uncle Ben seemed to read Peter's mind. He patted his hand weakly and said, "Go on, kid. Thank him for me."
Peter nodded, rising to his feet. He had someone to thankāand answers to seek.
