Chapter 22 - categorical refusal

When morning came, we all left the cave with the goal of collecting the remaining points. Since I didn't collect anything yesterday, I was in a very depressed state.

"Kim, are you okay?"

When Mary asked me, I couldn't help but laugh sarcastically.

Mary only had twenty points left to gather, while I still had to collect forty.

"Yes, I'm fine."

"Kim seems really tired."

Sylvia was laughing behind us.

"I clenched my teeth in frustration."

Let's see who'll be laughing in the end.

I left Mary and Sylvia behind before going to search for any monsters.

But no matter how much I searched the forest, I didn't find any monsters.

Just an empty forest.

"Damn it... Why are there no monsters?"

Why aren't any monsters showing up? Isn't there supposed to be at least one?

[Host, I already told you that the world will try to prevent you from interfering with the story.]

"So there's a chance I won't find any monsters?"

[Yes.]

"Can the world change the events that will happen to the other characters, or is this happening to me only?"

[What would it gain from changing the events that happen to other characters?]

"So it's settled."

[What do you mean, Host?]

"I mean, you idiot, if it's destined for Mary, Sylvia, and Liam to enter Class S, that means they'll find monsters, right?"

[Yes...]

"Then I should stick close to them and steal some points, right?"

[But that might lead to some dangerous situations.]

"I don't care. The most important thing now is getting into Class S."

I headed toward where Mary and Sylvia were.

They were talking about something, but I couldn't hear anything because of the distance.

When I reached them, they stopped talking.

Mary began to speak.

"Sylvia and I talked about a plan that could get all of us into Class S."

"Sylvia has a hundred points, so she'll donate twenty points to Liam so both of them will have eighty points."

I wasn't surprised when I heard Liam's points because he's simply...

A leech.

Sylvia weakens the monsters, and Liam finishes them off.

Liam became one of the top twenty students in the game after obtaining the egg, but since I took it, I don't think he'll last until midyear.

And the one I have to be most careful of is Sylvia.

If she senses even the slightest threat from me, she'll kill me without a second thought.

Every time I remember that kiss, a huge feeling of humiliation runs through my body

"Kim Hyul, are you listening to me?"

Mary interrupted my thoughts before she continued.

"We'll all work together to gather the most points possible."

"Alright."

Just as we finished talking, we heard Liam screaming.

Sylvia, William, and I rushed toward the sound of the scream to find Liam running away from an F-rank monster.

"Wait here, I'll be back soon."

When Sylvia tried to move forward to kill the monster, I pulled out my gun and aimed a bullet at the monster's head.

Boom…

The monster's head exploded into pieces before it fell dead.

Sylvia looked at the gun, shook her head, and walked over to Liam.

"Liam, are you okay?"

"Yes… Do you know how much I suffered just now?"

Liam started crying in Sylvia's arms.

[Points collected: 65]

The watch lit up blue before displaying the number of points.

Only three monsters left.

"There's something I want to say. Can you all gather here?"

Sylvia spoke, and we gathered around where Liam was sitting.

"There's a place I think the monsters are gathering."

Sylvia spoke.

Mary couldn't help but ask,

"We can go there right away, just tell us."

"By the river."

When Sylvia uttered those words, the mood in the group changed quickly.

"Why would I go back there?"

Mary spoke as Sylvia raised her eyebrow and asked,

"Why are you so scared?"

"Heh…"

Mary laughed before looking at Sylvia with disappointment.

"You didn't see what's in the river, did you?"

"….."

"I'm never going back there."

"I don't know what you saw in the river, but if you think you can collect the remaining points through normal means, I advise you not to try."

Mary couldn't respond to Sylvia.

We all realized she was right.

Even though she wasn't obligated to help us, she was telling the truth.

"Fine, I'll go, but Kim will stay a little far from the river."

I couldn't help but sigh. Seems like she considers me a dear friend.

"Alright, I'm okay with that."

"Okay, let's head to the river."

"No, I refuse."

Of course, the one who rejected Mary's suggestion was none other than me.

To be continued…
